“The Peasants”, directed by DK Welchman and Hugh Welchman, is by far the most popular Polish film since the pandemic redefined the cinema industry – no Polish production has drawn such an audience since March 2020. Poland’s Oscar candidate has so far been seen by a record-breaking audience of more than 1.52 million. The film is also entering distribution in other countries – the first screenings in the United Kingdom and Spain take place as early as 1 December, with further releases planned for next year.
Especially for Poles living in the UK, distributor Vertigo Releasing has scheduled screenings of the film in Polish with English subtitles. “The Peasants” goes on wide release in the United Kingdom on 8 December, but special screenings are planned from 1 December in more than 100 cinemas. More information about screenings in the UK: www.thepeasantsmovieuk.com.
The film’s producers are currently working on promoting “The Peasants” among the members of the American Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, who will decide on the Oscar nominations. A major role in the campaign is played by the soundtrack by Łukasz L.U.C. Rostkowski and the Rebel Babel Film Orchestra. The single “Jesień – Tańcuj” has been played more than 3.6 million times on YouTube and over 5 million times on Spotify. The follow-up release, “Koniec Lata” (in the English-language version the song will be sung by Katie Melua), has clocked up nearly 900,000 views on YouTube and almost a million on Spotify.
The digital album consists of 21 compositions by Łukasz L.U.C. Rostkowski and the Rebel Babel Film Orchestra. The physical album contains as many as 24 tracks – 3 more than its streaming version. The record features many well-known artists, including Kayah, Dagadana, Laboratorium Pieśni, Sutari, Tęgie Chłopy, Bela Komaszyńska, the band Lor, Maria Pomianowska, Apolonia Nowak and T.ETNO, as well as Ukrainian artists (the Vyrij Choir) and the Belarusian bagpiper Vital Voronau.
