During the ‘crazy nineties’ freedom returns to Poland, and the entire country dreams the American Dream; in the midst of the ‘great transformation’, the new ‘gold rush’, hopes of going ‘from rags to riches’ can come true. Tomek and Rudy, two country boys fuelled by passion, bid the grey reality farewell and embark on the quest to become Disco Polo stars.
They begin their career playing at country discos and fire stations, and eventually, as ‘LASER’, the duo reaches the top by signing a contract with the ‘Alfa’ recording company, where Daniel Polak (Tomasz Kot) reigns supreme. There, Tomek falls in love with the beautiful and eccentric diva Gensonina (Joanna Kulig), finds money and fame, and girls are dancing only for him. But the success has its price – money can only buy an illusion of freedom, and the American Dream rapidly turns into a rude awakening. DISCO POLO is a comedy thriller, a wild romance and road movie mixed with charm and absurdity.
Rising stars of the Disco scene are played by: Dawid Ogrodnik, Piotr Głowacki, Joanna Kulig and Aleksandra Hamkało – all well-recognized young Polish artists, accompanied by established actors, such as: Tomasz Kot, Iwona Bielska, Jacek Koman, Janusz Chabior, Juliusz Chrząstowski and Mariusz Drężek. Radosław Liszewski, Tomasz Niecik and Robert Klatt, some of the most popular Disco Polo artists, appear as guests.
The film was directed by Maciej Bochniak, author of ‘ONE BILLION HAPPY PEOPLE’, a full-length documentary about the band Bayer Full and their Chinese tour. The director wrote the script with Mateusz Kościukiewicz. The soundtrack includes 26 hits, among them songs by: Weekend, Akcent, Scanner, Niecik, Classic, Boys, and more.
