Some stories lose none of their significance with the passing of time. On the contrary — they resonate even more strongly as the years go by. From 18 to 20 May, the European Parliament in Strasbourg is hosting “Być jak Jacek Kuroń” (“To Be Like Jacek Kuroń”), a multimedia exhibition devoted to Jacek Kuroń — a man who co-founded the democratic opposition in Poland and spent his whole life reminding us that freedom is meaningless without solidarity and responsibility for others.

The exhibition is held under the patronage of the President of the European Parliament, Roberta Metsola. The hosts of the event are Bogdan Zdrojewski and Andrzej Halicki of the European People’s Party. The exhibition has been designed as a modern narrative about a man whose biography became part of the history of European freedom. Archival materials, photographs, quotations and multimedia guide visitors through the most important moments of Kuroń’s life — from the open letter of 1965, his opposition activity and the founding of the Workers’ Defence Committee, to the building of civil society up to the elections of 1989.

It is precisely today that this story resonates with particular force. Europe is once again talking about security, democracy and human rights. About how easy it is to divide people, and how hard it is to build a community. Kuroń believed that freedom begins with a simple gesture towards another person — with conversation, empathy and the courage not to remain indifferent.

The exhibition is co-financed by the Polish National Foundation. The Foundation’s support is of key importance for staging the project at the heart of European public debate, making it possible to present the Polish experience of the struggle for freedom in an international context. It is an important signal that the history of Poland’s road to democracy remains a vital part of European identity and of today’s conversation about values.

The exhibition is an integral part of the promotional campaign for the film “Our Revolution”, directed by Piotr Domalewski. The production tells the story of Jacek and Grażyna Kuroń from the perspective of their relationship — intense, full of love and mutual strength, yet put to the test by history. The film depicts the events surrounding the birth of the democratic opposition without pathos, focusing above all on emotions, everyday life and the private dimension of great history. Magdalena Popławska and Arkadiusz Jakubik play the leading roles. The film’s theatrical release is planned for 11 November 2026 — a symbolic date for a story about freedom.
