Today, Jacek Kuroń would have celebrated his 92nd birthday. A charismatic opposition figure, one of the founders of the Workers’ Defence Committee and a key architect of Poland’s democratic transition, he combined uncompromising action with a belief in dialogue and solidarity throughout his life. Celebrations marking his birthday are underway at the European Solidarity Centre, inaugurating the Year of Jacek Kuroń. This is a special year – it marks 50 years since the establishment of KOR, an event that permanently changed the history of the Polish opposition and cemented its place in the European history of the struggle for freedom. During the meeting at the ECS, teachers are discussing how to talk to young people about solidarity, responsibility and courage in a way that is understandable and authentic to them. We are also presenting the latest photographs from ‘Our Revolution’.

The year 2026 holds particular symbolic significance. It marks 50 years since the events of June ’76 in Radom and Ursus and the establishment of the Workers’ Defence Committee, led by Jacek Kuroń. It was precisely those events that opened a new chapter in the history of the democratic opposition in Poland and cemented Kuroń’s position as one of the key architects of the idea of civic solidarity. In this anniversary context, the film “Our Revolution” takes on added significance – it reminds us that behind great historical processes lie real people, their relationships, choices and courage.

At the European Solidarity Centre, we are celebrating the birthday of Jacek Kuroń, one of the most important figures in Poland’s journey to freedom. This is not only an opportunity to reflect together on his legacy, but also to equip educators with practical tools for working with the younger generation. Magdalena Popławska, Arkadiusz Jakubik, Anna Blumsztajn and Seweryn Blumsztajn attended the birthday celebrations.

THAT LOVE CHANGED POLAND

“Our Revolution” is a story of love stronger than fear, repression and political violence. It is the tale of two people who believed that together they could change the world – and who were able to turn that belief into action. He – charismatic, uncompromising, ready to pay the ultimate price for his convictions. She – courageous, warm-hearted and determined, the quiet strength underpinning their shared struggle. Their love is not merely a backdrop to the story – it is its heart and driving force.

Against the backdrop of their relationship, key events in Poland’s recent history unfold: workers’ protests, the emergence of the democratic opposition, the activities of the Workers’ Defence Committee, surveillance, imprisonment and the tragedy of martial law. The camera takes the viewer from intimate moments of domestic life to moments of historical trial, in which privacy gives way to a sense of responsibility for others. The protagonists’ flat becomes a space of conspiracy, and everyday life – a constant choice between safety and solidarity.

The film shows how grand ideals intertwine with intimacy and how private life becomes part of history. It is a moving portrait of two people who proved that love can be an act of courage and that it can be a force capable of changing the course of events. The film is scheduled for release on 11 November 2026.
