Two family films distributed by NEXT FILM – “Dziadku, wiejemy!” (prod. Furia Film, dir. Olga Chajdas) and “Skrzat. A New Beginning’ (prod. Green Rat Production, dir. Krzysztof Komander) will compete for the Janusz Korczak Golden Lion Award for the best film for children and young people at the 50th Polish Film Festival in Gdynia.
Although ‘Gnome. A New Beginning’ will only be released on 19 September, it has already managed to win the hearts of audiences. The international premiere of the film took place during one of the oldest and most prestigious film festivals in the world – the Locarno Film Festival. In addition to the Golden Lions at the 50th Polish Film Festival in Gdynia, the production will also compete for an award in the Main Competition of the Tauron Young Horizons International Festival.
‘SKRZAT. A NEW BEGINNING”: TRUST THE POWER OF FRIENDSHIP
It entertains, moves and prompts conversation. ‘Skrzat. A New Beginning”, Krzysztof Komander’s feature debut, is intelligent entertainment that is a great starting point for conversations on important issues that not only children, but also their parents, have to face. The film touches on issues of peer violence, facing life changes or responsibility for the nature around us. ‘Gnome. A New Beginning’ has received the honorary patronage of the Ombudsman for Children.
Eleven-year-old Hania has to find herself in a completely new environment after moving to another town. She has no friends and her belief in the existence of gnomes exposes her to ridicule from her peers. When the girls in her class take away her locket – a priceless family heirloom – Hania decides to get it back at all costs. To do so, she must prove that gnomes really exist. In this adventurous mission, she is helped by Michal, the school outsider and young inventor. It is thanks to his support that Hania will open up to the world again and understand that real magic is hidden in friendship.
‘Skrzat. A New Beginning’ is a project of many debuts – Krzysztof Komander is behind the camera of a full-length feature film for the first time. Amelia Golda, playing the main character, will appear on the big screen for the first time. The film also proved a completely new challenge for experienced actors, including Arkadiusz Jakubik, who had never before appeared in a family film. The cast also included Maksymilian Zielinski, Anna Smołowik, Wojciech Solarz and Agata Turkot. Borys Szyc has also been cast in a special role for the project.
The film was directed, written and edited by Krzysztof Komander. The producer is Dagmara Piasecka of Green Rat Production. NEXT FILM is responsible for distribution. ‘Skrzat. A New Beginning’ in cinemas from 19 September.
“GRANDPA, WE BLOW!”: THREE GENERATIONS AND A DRAGON UNITED BY A COMMON ADVENTURE
“Dziadek, wiejemy!”, directed by Olga Chajdas, is an original production in which live-action cinematography is intertwined with animation elements. An engaging story about the most important values in life and the magic of imagination.
One day, Jeremi’s grandfather causes such a commotion in the retirement home that he is threatened with transfer to a psychiatric hospital. Marta, his daughter, agrees to take him in, although she finds this difficult, as Jeremi is unpredictable and has a vivid imagination. The situation is complicated by Jagoda, Marta’s daughter, who adores her grandfather and shares his crazy ideas. When Jeremi refuses to move in with the family, Jagoda decides to take matters into her own hands. The girl and the grandfather set off on an adventurous journey to the legendary ship Light of the Sea. They are chased by a gang of villains led by Waldemar, a rich man, and Jagoda’s terrified mother. And a dragon follows them, too.
The unusual grandfather-granddaughter duo is made up of Jan Peszek and Anna Nowak, who makes her big screen debut in the role of Jagoda. They are partnered by Agnieszka Grochowska, Michał Majnicz, Włodzimierz Press, Wiktor Zborowski and Sonia Roszczuk. The second child role is played by Filip Tkaczyk.
The director of the film is Olga Chajdas. The script was written by Emil Płoszajski. Bartosz Bieniek is responsible for the cinematography. The film’s producers are Małgorzata Małysa and Karolina Galuba from Furia Film. Distribution is handled by NEXT FILM. The film was released in cinemas on 9 May.
