A family affair on screen and behind the scenes. “Grandpa, Let’s Go!” hits cinemas on 9 May. A moving and funny film, and proof that real emotions are born where professionalism, passion and… family ties intertwine. The production brought Jan Peszek and Błażej Peszek together on set – and these are not the only family threads in the film’s crew.

They graduated from the same Academy of Theatre Arts in Kraków and have stood side by side on stage, but this is the first time they will appear as a duo on the cinema screen, where they play… the same character. In the upcoming production “Grandpa, Let’s Go!”, directed by Olga Chajdas, Jan and Błażej Peszek play Jeremi – the titular grandpa and his younger self from the past.

The film’s Jeremi is an eccentric senior full of energy who has no intention of surrendering to old age. For most of his life he was chiefly occupied with avoiding any kind of responsibility. He raised his daughter on his own, yet fatherhood always mattered less than a colourful life. Spontaneous, scatterbrained, a little cynical, at times very romantic. Jeremi knows all sorts of magic tricks and countless tall tales, which his daughter Marta used to hate – and which his granddaughter Jagoda now adores. When he learns that he does not have much time left, he decides not to waste it. He sets off with his granddaughter on the journey he once wanted to take his daughter on. A certain unresolved matter from years ago casts a shadow over the trip.

In “Grandpa, Let’s Go!”, Jeremi’s present-day life is interwoven with flashback scenes. We get to know him both as a senior – played by Jan Peszek – and as a young father, played by Błażej.

Interestingly, family ties also connect other members of the film’s crew. Costume designer Lena Firak and sound engineer Jarek “Bodo” Bajdowski are married in private life. The costume team also includes a mother and daughter – Anna Englert and Aniela Szałańska. Cinematographer Bartek Bieniek and producer Małgorzata Małysa make a well-matched duo not only when working on films, but also in their private life.

From the very beginning, the makers of “Grandpa, Let’s Go!” were guided by the aim of building bridges – and not only between generations. That is why, from its release day on 9 May, the film will be available with audio description. It can be used via the Audiomovie and Kino Dostępne apps.

 

WHAT IS “GRANDPA, LET’S GO!” ABOUT

One day Grandpa Jeremi causes such a commotion in his quiet retirement home that he risks being transferred to a psychiatric hospital. Marta, his daughter, agrees to take him in, although it is hard for her, because Jeremi is unpredictable and has a vivid imagination. The situation is complicated by Jagoda, Marta’s daughter, who adores her grandpa and shares his crazy ideas. When Jeremi refuses to live with the family, Jagoda decides to take matters into her own hands. The girl and her grandpa set off on an adventure-filled journey to the legendary ship Światło Morza (the Light of the Sea). In pursuit go a gang of villains led by the wealthy Waldemar, and Jagoda’s terrified mum. Oh, and a dragon – a dragon sets off after them too.

“Grandpa, Let’s Go!” is a family film full of humour and warmth, about the most important values in life, adventure and the magic of imagination.

The role of Jagoda is the debut of Anna Nowak. Her grandpa Jeremi is played by Jan Peszek, and her mum by Agnieszka Grochowska. The other roles are played by, among others, Michał Majnicz, Włodzimierz Press, Wiktor Zborowski, Sonia Roszczuk, Filip Tkaczyk and Klementyna Lamort De Gail.

The film is directed by Olga Chajdas. The screenplay was penned by Emil Płoszajski. Cinematography is by Bartosz Bieniek. The film’s producers are Małgorzata Małysa and Karolina Galuba of Furia Film. Distribution is handled by NEXT FILM.
