“Supersisters”, directed by Maciej Barczewski, arrives on cinema screens on 10 May. The greatest talents of the young generation – Katarzyna Gałązka, Karolina Bruchnicka and Tymek Frączek – join forces with acclaimed and respected actors Grzegorz Damięcki, Mateusz Kościukiewicz and Marek Kalita in a production about superheroes (and superheroines), packed with Hollywood-grade special effects. Teenage Ala (Katarzyna Gałązka) does not fit into the provincial world around her. She keeps rebelling and defying her father (Grzegorz Damięcki), a physics teacher at the local school. When Ala accidentally discovers that she has superpowers and meets her sister Lena (Karolina Bruchnicka), whose existence she never knew about, her life is turned upside down – quite literally. The girls, gifted with supernatural powers, are being tracked by the Colonel (Marek Kalita) and his dangerous associate Hektor (Mateusz Kościukiewicz) from the secret Department 92. The soldiers’ goal is to create a powerful new-generation weapon. To obtain it, they are prepared to sacrifice a great deal – even the sisters’ lives. Will Ala and Lena, after years apart, be able to join forces and work together? Will the supersisters come to the rescue not only of each other, but of the whole world?
“Supersisters” marks a new level for superhero films in Polish cinema. An action-packed, effects-laden science fiction story about courage, determination and the superpowers each of us carries within.
The screen brings together rising stars of Polish cinema – Katarzyna Gałązka (“Klangor”, “Bring Back Alice”), Karolina Bruchnicka (“Córka trenera”, “Minuta ciszy”) and big-screen debutant Tymek Frączek. They are joined by Grzegorz Damięcki, Mateusz Kościuszkiewicz and Marek Kalita.
A superhero film set is no small challenge: – You could say I got a taste of Hollywood… For three months I prepared intensively for the role physically – personal training sessions, stunt training, a meal-box diet and near-daily acting rehearsals. Thanks to that, I learned to fly… and I must admit it was hard to come back down to earth – says Katarzyna Gałązka.
– Until now I have mainly been interested in auteur cinema, but as an actress I am constantly looking for challenges and new opportunities to grow. Immersing myself in something previously unfamiliar to me was a new and exciting experience. In trying to develop my character more deeply, I looked for her strength not only on a psychological level, but also a physical one. I spent several months in intensive strength training and stunt rehearsals to portray Lena’s character as faithfully as possible. I am glad I could take part in a project that challenged me, in which the two leading roles are female and which says a great deal about the strength of women – says Karolina Bruchnicka of taking on the role.
– Superhero films are amazing! They show us a world full of extraordinary adventures and possibilities, where we can escape the daily routine. But more importantly, they teach us that every one of us can be a hero, regardless of age or social status. All it takes is a little determination to achieve great things – to become a superhero – says Tymek Frączek.
The film is directed by Maciej Barczewski, who also wrote the screenplay together with Krzysztof Gureczny. “Supersisters” was produced by Aurum Film, the studio behind, among others, the Oscar-nominated “Boże Ciało”, the Netflix hit “Wszyscy moi przyjaciele nie żyją” and the multi-award-winning “Kos”. Distribution is handled by NEXT FILM, which has brought to cinemas such hits as “The Peasants”, “Kleks Academy” and “Too Old for Fairy Tales 2”.
