“Nie będzie romansu” – Maria Dębska and Krzysztof Zalewski Team Up on the Song Promoting “Autumn Girl”

Maria Dębska and Krzysztof Zalewski played a pair of lovers in “Autumn Girl”. Today you can see them in the music video for “Nie będzie romansu”, the song promoting the film. It is a bonus track from the album “Bo we mnie jest seks”. The film opens in cinemas on 19 November.

They had no easy task – both on the film set and in the recording studio they had to measure themselves against legends. In “Autumn Girl” Maria Dębska plays one of the greatest stars of all… Kalina Jędrusik. Her performance was recognised as the best leading female role at this year’s Polish Film Festival in Gdynia. The musical task was no simple matter either – to create a song that echoes the iconic Kabaret Starszych Panów numbers featured in the film, capturing the atmosphere not only of the 1960s but also of the film itself.

How do you write a song for a film “bristling” with the finest Polish songs, written by Przybora and Wasowski? How do you make it a bow to those times, and yet have it sound contemporary?

I had quite a problem with it. Musically, I built the song around a beautiful theme by Radek Łuka that resounds in the film. Lyrically, by way of preparation, I immersed myself in Przybora’s songs to soak up his sensitivity, and I tried to imagine what I could write for Kalina Jędrusik today.

Then I gathered outstanding musicians and, under the baton of Andrzej Smolik, we recorded them live, on tape, at the S4 studio (named after Jerzy Wasowski). The result is before you: “Nie będzie romansu” performed by me and Marysia Dębska – the film’s Kalina.

Once again I find that you never know what is waiting around the corner. When Krzysiek Zalewski and I met on the set of “Autumn Girl”, where I play Kalina Jędrusik and he plays her beloved Lucek, I had no idea that less than two years later we would shut ourselves away in a studio to record a song together, based on a musical theme from the film.

I have been involved in music all my life, playing the piano, though singing far more rarely, so for me it was a bit of a leap into the deep end. But is there anyone in Poland who would not want to sing with Krzysiek Zalewski – and under the direction of Andrzej Smolik at that? I found myself in the best possible situation.

While in the film, where I perform 10 of Kalina’s songs, things were a little easier for me – thanks to the classical phrasing that is close to my heart, and to the fact that I could shamelessly crib Kalina’s performing ideas – here we had to step out of the retro mood and say something musically new, in our own way. All the while keeping the hits of Kabaret Starszych Panów and the music of those years somewhere in the back of our minds.

Krzysiek wrote beautiful words and music, and that leap into the deep end turned out to be a very pleasant journey. Here it is: “Nie będzie romansu”.

Warsaw, the 1960s. Millions of Poles sit down in front of black-and-white television sets.

Numerous scandals, life in a love triangle with her husband Stanisław Dygat (Leszek Lichota) and Lucek (Krzysztof Zalewski), controversial statements and outfits oozing sex appeal also earn Kalina the title of the chief scandal-maker of the Polish People’s Republic. And yet the biggest scandal involving her is only about to begin…

“Autumn Girl” portrays an important chapter in the life of Kalina Jędrusik, who can confidently be called the greatest icon of Polish pop culture. It is a story of the lights and shadows, the highs and lows of her dizzying career. The events of Jędrusik’s life play out in an atmosphere of wild fun among the social elite of the day.

On screen we will also see other colourful figures of Polish culture: Kazimierz Kutz (Borys Szyc), Tadeusz Konwicki (Paweł Tomaszewski) and the creators of Kabaret Starszych Panów – Jeremi Przybora (Rafał Rutkowski) and Jerzy Wasowski (Dariusz Basiński).
