Official film teaser

The film appeared in the line-up of the Director’s Debuts Competition at the 2018 edition of the prestigious Camerimage International Film Festival. It is also set to be presented at the Tofifest Festival in Toruń. So far it has been shown at festivals in Karlovy Vary, Koszalin, Wrocław, Gdynia, Haifa and Luxemburg.

“53 Wars” is a story inspired by true events. Anka and Witek are a loving married couple. He is a war correspondent who spends the better part of the year at the heart of military conflicts. She spends her days waiting for him to come home. Anka tries to lead a normal life, but in time her fears for Witek start infecting her life like a poison. After he leaves for yet another war zone, she starts preparing for the worst.

The film is based upon a book by Grażyna Jagielska, „Miłość z kamienia. Życie z korespondentem wojennym” [“Love made of stone. Living with a war correspondent”], which is an autobiographical account of her relationship with a renowned reporter, Wojciech Jagielski, and her stay in a combat stress treatment facility (even though she’d never been in a war).

So far “53 Wars” has been presented at the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival (international premiere) and the Koszalin Debut Film Festival “Młodzi i Film” [Youth and Film] (Jantar award for the best female role and the Youth Jury award), Nowe Horyzonty in Wrocław (the Discoveries section), the Polish Film Festival in Gdynia (Different Perspective competition) and the Film Festival in Haifa. Further festival screenings are planned.

Besides Magdalena Popławska and Michał Żurawski the cast also includes Kinga Preis, Dorota Kolak and Krzysztof Stroiński. The film was produced by Munk Studio-SFP, the producer of such films as “Fear of Falling”, “The Erlprince”, or the rather famous “Silent Night”.

“53 Wars” will premiere in Polish cinemas on the 19th of October.
