Underdog is now playing in cinemas across Poland. Early screenings of the first Polish film about MMA have brought wonderful reviews from the film-goers as well as the critics. “A surprising film”, “Eryk Lubos shines in his role”, “Mamed Khalidov delivers a convincing and honest performance”, “The casting of Chabior is spot-on”, “A gripping storyline”, “Women are going to love it”, “Exciting sports accompanied by romance and humour” – is what the latest on-line reviews have been saying.
‘There’s way too few sports films in Polish cinema, so Underdog is a step in the right direction’ – writes Dawid Muszyński on Naekranie.pl. Recognition is also due to the remarkable cast. ‘Lubos […] looks as if he had been waiting for a role like that. And that translates into the way people receive his protagonist. It’s impossible not to like “Kosa”, not to root for him or feel for him in his mishaps. He makes quite an impression when put into the cage next to the MMA legend, Mamed Khalidov’ – writes Artur Cichmiński in his review for Interia.pl. According to Szymon Piórek, a journalist writing for “Przegląd Sportowy”: ‘The film has been receiving tremendous approbation and applause from its audiences’. Michał Dziedzic (wp.pl) adds: ‘MMA is fight, blood, sweat and tears. In addition to that, the director makes sure to include sex scenes and a substantial dose of humour. Sounds like a good Friday night, doesn’t it?’. The number of pre-sold tickets only confirms that viewers have been waiting a long time for a film like Underdog! According to Karolina Korwin-Piotrowska: ‘It’s going to be quite a hit. Because the KSW [MMA] fans are going to hit the cinemas in large numbers and will leave the screenings delighted. It’s going to be a hit, because sceptics like myself will leave the cinemas smiling’.
‘Underdog proves that Rocky may just as well have been born somewhere in Poland’ – Artut Zaborski, Empik.
Underdog tells the story of an MMA fighter’s downfall and his journey back to the top. It is a tale of human weakness and strength, filled with realistic action scenes. A tale of doubt and despair that is dispelled by budding love. A tale of fighting against the odds and rising up after the fall.
Borys “Kosa” Kosiński (Eryk Lubos) is an MMA fighter at the top of his game. During the most important fight with his greatest opponent, Deni Takaev (Mamed Khalidov), Kosiński makes a mistake that shatters his career. He loses everything. That event marks the beginning of a series of the protagonist’s ups and downs, but most importantly, it forces him to stand to a truly titanic fight for respect and love.
‘Everything in the script was polished to the finest detail in order to show the world of MMA the way it really is’ – said Mamed Khalodiv. ‘We get to see workout routines, the life in the ring, and the world beyond it. That’s just the way it is, one day you’re on a roll, the next you hit rock bottom. It’s important to get back on your feet when you fall down’.
MMA, i.e. mixed martial arts, is a discipline where the athletes fight in cages and use a variety of legitimate techniques to defeat the opponent. It is a controversial sport that arouses high emotions, and yet it has a huge number of fans in Poland. Each gala attracts thousands of people and live transmissions are watched by millions! In this film we get to see the world of MMA through the eyes of the fighters.
Besides Eryk Lubos and Mamed Khalidov the stellar cast also includes: Aleksandra Popławska, Tomasz Włosok, Janusz Chabior, Jarosław Boberek, Emma Giegżno, Mariusz Drężek. For Mamed Khalodov, former KSW Middleweight Champion (2009) and Light Heavyweight Champion (2015), Underdog is his acting debut.
KSW Federation, one of the leading MMA promotions in Europe, is the official partner and consultant for the title. To date, it can boast 50 world class galas, with over 300 fighters and millions of television viewers in Poland and worldwide.
The film was produced by EKIPA – Ewa Lewandowska, Tomasz Mandes. It was co-produced by Polsat Television and NEXT FILM, the latter also distributing the film.
