Papusza’ is a film based on a dramatic story of Bronisława ‘Papusza’ Wajs – the first Romani poet, who wrote down their poems. It is also a story about the meeting between two poets: Papusza and a Polish poet Jerzy Ficowski, who noticed her great talent, encouraged to record her works and who then translated them into Polish. In 1956 Papusza’s first poetic book was published. It wouldn’t be possible without the help of a third poet, Julian Tuwim. Papusza’s songs permanently enriched Polish culture, providing it with an insight into the Roma soul.
‘Papusza’ is an artistic historical film. It tries to throw light upon the turbulent life of the poet. The action commences in 1910 and ends in the 80s. Not only did the filmmakers have to realistically depict a number separate epochs, but also they had to reconstruct the whole, gone by now, Romani world. Construction of the trains of Romani caravans and the carts, preparing the set design and make-up was done with so much attention to details that the preparations took more than five years.
‘Papusza’ is the first Polish movie in Roma language. Its big assets are the beautiful black and white cinematography by Krzysztof Ptak and Wojciech Staroń and music by Jan Kanty Pawluśkiewicz.
