FOUR TITLES OF THE NEXT FILM COMPANY IN THE MAIN COMPETITION OF THE 44TH POLISH FILM FESTIVAL IN GDYNIA

The most important event of the Polish film world – the Polish Feature Film Festival in Gdynia – will start on 16th of September. The festival program included four films distributed by NEXT FILM. ” Ikar. Legenda Mietka Kosza.” (Icarus. The Legend of Mietek Kosz) (dir. Maciej Pieprzyca), “Piłsudski”  (dir. Michał Rosa), “Słodki koniec dnia” (Dolce fine giornata) (dir. Jacek Borcuch) and “Ukryta gra” (The Coldest Game) (dir. Łukasz Kośmicki) will compete for the Golden Lions in the Main Competition. This year’s 44th edition of the festival will take place on 16-21 September.

 

„Ikar. Legenda Mietka Kosza” (Icarus. The Legend of Mietek Kosz) directed by Maciej Pieprzyca is a story of a blind piano genius inspired by real events. Mietek loses his sight as a child. His mother puts him under the care of nuns in Laski. At the blind centre, the boy discovers that music can become a way for him to see and tell the world anew. Mietek becomes a great classical pianist.

However, when he discovers jazz, he has only one goal: to become the best jazz pianist in Poland. He becomes more and more successful, not only in Poland, but all over the world. He wins the prestigious Montreux Jazz Festival. The charismatic singer Zuza unexpectedly appears in his life. This meeting will change his life.

Maciej Pieprzyca has already left Gdynia with awards three times  – in 2008 he received an award for his directing debut or his second film i.e Drzazgi”. The films: „Chce się żyć” and “Jestem mordercą”received Silver Lions. „Ikar. Legenda Mietka Kosza” (Icarus. The Legend of Mietek Kosz) will be released in cinemas on 18th of October. The lead roles are played by: Dawid Ogrodnik, Justyna Wasielewska, Piotr Adamczyk, Jowita Budnik. The producer is RE Studio.

“Piłsudski”, directed by Michał Rosa, is a film event of this autumn. It’s 1901. Jozef Piłsudski “Ziuk” (Borys Szyc) after a bravura escape from a mental hospital, he again leads the Polish independence underground. He stands determined on the battlefield, in his private life he succumbs to passions, torn between two women – his wife and his lover.

Considered as a terrorist by the conservative members of the Polish Socialist Party, Piłsudski and his closest collaborators will stop at nothing  – attacks on tsarist officials and top officers, smuggling of bombs, daring attack on a train – to achieve his goal: an independent Poland. The year 1914 is approaching and “Ziuk” sees new opportunities for the realization of the impossible. “Piłsudski” is an adventurous cinema, a fiery affair, a story of the Marshal that has never been known before.

“Słodki koniec dnia” (Dolce fine giornata) directed by Jacek Borcuch is a story about courage, power of the word and complicated family relationships. The fear of the unknown and the passion for life. The film takes place in the Italian province, the Etruscan city of Volterra. Maria, a Polish poet, Nobel Prize winner and moral authority, has lived here for years. The world of protagonists is turned upside down when they receive shocking news of the terrorist attack in Rome. Maria’s uncompromising attitude and political incorrectness turn out to have dramatic consequences.

 

In the role of Maria we will see Krystyna Janda, who received the Special Jury Prize at the Sundance Festival for her performance. Kasia Smutniak is playing the role of Maria’s daughter. An international cast including Antonio Catania, Lorenzo de Moor, Vincent Riotta and Robin Renucci, is involved in the project. The screenplay is written by Jacek Borcuch and Szczepan Twardoch. Daniel Bloom is responsible for the music. The producer of a film is NO SUGAR FILMS.

“Ukryta gra” (The Coldest Game) is the first Polish film with a Hollywood cast.

The spies, the Cold War and the powers race are the motifs of the thriller produced by Watchout Studio („Bogowie” (Gods), „Sztuka kochania” (The Art of Loving)) directed by Łukasz Kośmicki. The action of the film with a star-studded international cast takes place in the scenery of the Palace of Culture and Science. The cast including: Bill Pullman, Robert Więckiewicz, Lotte Verbeek, Corey Johnson.

The latest production of Watchout Studio is a spy thriller full of suspense. During the Cold War, the American secret service kidnapped a brilliant mathematician to fight a chess match against the Soviet master. The international tournament at the Palace of Culture and Science in Warsaw turns out to be just a cover-up for a spy game in which saving humanity from nuclear annihilation is at stake.
